What to do in the area of El Arenal in Seville?
El Arenal will surprise you with an immense number of points of interest to visit. Pay attention to the most outstanding ones.
Torre del Oro (Gold Tower)
The Torre del Oro (near the Alfonso XIII canal) and the Giralda are the most outstanding symbols of Seville. This watchtower, part of a fortified complex, was originally intended to protect the city, rather than serve as a gold deposit. It is presumed that its name derives from the golden glow it casts over the river. You can complete your visit by going to the Naval Museum, which is located in the tower itself.
El Arenal Market
In the current location of the El Arenal market, the convent of El Pópulo used to stand. It was later transformed into the Pópulo prison. This market was built in 1947 according to the design of Juan de Talavera y Heredia. On the façade of the building, there are ceramic altarpieces that narrate the legends of ancient monuments that no longer exist.
Bullring of the Maestranza
The Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, the oldest bullring in Spain, stands out as the venue for the bullfights of the Feria de Abril. Considered a Monument of Cultural Interest since 1984, it attracts a large number of visitors.
Its bullfighting museum exhibits an outstanding collection of paintings and prints, including Goya's Twelve Bullfighting Prints. The paintings room presents oil paintings from the 18th to the 20th century, while the prints room houses lithographs and historical engravings. The visit is completed with the stables of the bullfighting horses and the emotional chapel of the Bullfighters, dedicated to the Virgin of Charity.
Seville Cathedral
Seville Cathedral, built in the 12th century as a mosque, became a Christian church in 1248. The Giralda, one of the most prominent buildings in the city, was originally a minaret.
Today, it is a Gothic cathedral of immense dimensions. It has a total of ten doors: the Puerta de la Asunción is the main door, while the Puerta del Perdón is the oldest, dating back to the Almohad mosque. The Royal Chapel houses the Virgin of the Kings and the remains of several monarchs.
Inside the cathedral is the High Altarpiece, which has 44 reliefs and 200 figures, and the tomb of Christopher Columbus. It also has an outstanding art gallery with sculptural works by artists such as Pedro Roldán and paintings by Murillo and Goya.
