The town's main square, Plaza de la Vila, lies right in the centre of Vilanova i la Geltrú. It was built in the 19th century following the Romantic/Neoclassical style. It is rectangular in shape and has two long colonnades along the sides with horseshoe arches, where you can sit and admire the beautiful surroundings.
Listed as a Cultural Heritage Site, the square is lined by three-storey buildings with horseshoe arches on the ground floor that give it a sense of symmetry. There are several important buildings on this square, such as Casa Manuel Olivella and a library, Biblioteca Joan Oliva. Before the square was built, this was the site of a Monastery of Capuchin Friars, until 1835.
But today, the most emblematic and important building on Plaza de la Vila is the town hall. This is the focal point for all the political and administrative activities that take place in Vilanova i la Geltrú. It’s also a good starting point if you’re visiting the town for the first time. Here in the town hall you’ll find all the information you need on the town’s sights and cultural activities, including the water sports offered by the sailing club and current exhibitions being held at the Can Papiol Museum.
The Town Hall of Vilanova i la Geltrú sits in perfect harmony with the rest of the buildings on the square. The seat of the local council is made up of three storeys and two attached buildings. It also has a large stone and metal sculpture of the librarian Joan Oliva.
To get to the square and to the Town Hall of Vilanova i la Geltrú, you can park your vehicle in our Saba public car park which is very close by, on Plaza Soler i Carbonell.
