What can you find around Avenida de Portugal?
The Avenida de Portugal offers numerous places to visit of great cultural interest. It is advisable to book a parking space using the Saba app to guarantee a carefree visit. Here are some of the highlights.
Madrid's Casa de Campo
The Casa de Campo, with its more than 1535 hectares, is the largest public park in Madrid. Its origins date back to Philip II's decision to establish the Court in Madrid, forming an estate that expanded over time.
It was converted into a Royal Forest during the reign of Ferdinand VI and Charles III extended its uses to livestock and agricultural purposes. It became a popular park when it was ceded to the people of Madrid during the Second Republic in 1931. In 2010, it received the distinction of Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Historic Site.
Today, although it is an urban park, the Casa de Campo is notable for its wooded area. It is home to a 4-kilometre botanical trail and a considerable avian biodiversity, thanks to the variety of ecosystems present in the area.
The Plaza de España
The Plaza de España not only houses the iconic monument to Miguel de Cervantes with Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, but also serves as a link between the Sabatini Gardens, the Campo del Moro, the Casa de Campo and Madrid Río.
After a profound transformation, with 70,000 m² and 1,110 trees, it has become a central axis of the city, offering a green space with sculptures, children's playgrounds and cycle paths.
In addition, historical remains were discovered, such as the patrol path of the old Cuartel de San Gil and the stables of the Royal Palace, works by Francesco Sabatini.
The Almudena Cathedral in Madrid
Madrid's Almudena Cathedral has a brief but rich history. Begun in 1879 by Francisco de Cubas as a pantheon for Queen María de la Mercedes, it was transformed into a cathedral in 1885.
Inspired by 13th-century French Gothic, the project was directed by several architects after Cubas' death in 1899. The crypt was inaugurated in 1911, but work was interrupted during the Civil War and resumed in 1939.
After some aesthetic changes, Fernando Chueca Goitia and Carlos Sidro led the completion in 1993. Consecrated by Pope John Paul II, it has a museum presenting the history of the Church and donations to the city's patron saints, the Virgin of Almudena and San Isidro Labrador.
