What to do in the Velázquez area?
Madrid is a city with an incredible cultural offer. Once you've parked in the car park, you have a wide variety of points of interest to visit. Pay attention to the following recommendations.
Juan Bravo Street
Calle Juan Bravo, the main thoroughfare in the Salamanca neighbourhood, runs from Paseo de la Castellana to Calle Francisco Silvela. This tree-lined boulevard has a grid urban layout with closed blocks and straight lines. Its points of interest include restaurant terraces from the Enrique de la Mata Gorostiza bridge. It stands out for its architectural mix of 19th century classics and residential buildings from the 1950s and 1960s.
The intersection with Calle de Velázquez, which has a sculpture of the painter Diego Velázquez and the imposing Palacio de Amboage, home to the Italian embassy, is also worth a visit.
Madrid's Golden Mile
In Madrid, the term "Golden Mile" refers to a distinguished part of the Salamanca district, delineated by the Paseo de la Castellana and the streets Juan Bravo, Príncipe de Vergara and Jorge Juan, between the districts of Castellana and Recoletos.
This area is the epicentre of exclusivity, housing the most luxurious shops and homes in the capital. It is home to the city's most affluent residents. The Golden Mile stands out for its majestic palatial buildings, the residence of Madrid's high society. It is also home to shops of renowned national and international fashion, decoration and jewellery firms.
The Puerta de Alcalá
The Puerta de Alcalá, located in the centre of the Plaza de la Independencia, is one of the five ancient royal gates to Madrid. It was ordered to be built by Charles III in 1778 to replace an earlier one from the 16th century.
Designed by Francesco Sabatini, it is a neoclassical triumphal arch, a precursor in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. With five openings, it is notable for its two different façades: the simple inner face and the more elaborate outer face with the royal coat of arms. Its name comes from the road to Alcalá de Henares.
