What to do in the Moncloa area?
The district of Moncloa-Aravaca is full of places to visit. Pay attention to the following points of interest that we recommend.
The Arco de la Victoria
The Arco de la Victoria, erected in the 1950s, commemorates the victory of the rebel side during the Civil War. Designed by Modesto López Otero and Pascual Bravo Sanfeliú, it has a 40-metre arch with rectangular bases. The decoration by Moisés de Huerta includes neoclassical bas-reliefs and figures alluding to military virtues and academic disciplines. At the top, a sculpture of Minerva leads a quadriga.
The Moncloa Lighthouse
This panoramic lift travels 92 metres to take visitors to the viewpoint of the Moncloa Lighthouse. It stands in the heart of the University City of Madrid and was an illumination tower with a total height of 110 metres. It was built in 1992 during the year the city was named European Capital of Culture. Next to the lighthouse is the Museum of America, which houses an outstanding collection of pre-Columbian, ethnographic and colonial pieces. Of special interest is the treasure of the Quimbayas, the most complete preserved American gold and silverwork.
The West Park
The West park, with almost 100 hectares, is located between the road to A Coruña, the Ciudad Universitaria and Moncloa in Madrid. It was initiated by Mayor Alberto Aguilera in 1906 and designed by Celedonio Rodrigáñez. It was rebuilt by Cecilio Rodríguez after the Civil War.
The park stands out for its monumentality and landscape design, following a layout reminiscent of an English garden, with marked slopes and curvilinear paths inspired by nature.
Some of the elements that stand out are the Madrid cable car, the Francisco Alcántara Ceramics School of Art and the Temple of Debod. In the southern part of the park is the Ramón Ortiz Rose Garden, which covers 15,000 square metres and has been the site of the International New Rose Competition of the Villa de Madrid since 1956.
